There are few things more important in menswear than fit. We’re not sure if we like the ‘self-tracking’ movement (a.k.a. ‘quantified self’ – using tracking devices to collect data on your sleep, heart-rate, blood pressure, etc.), but we think it really makes a difference to know the correct dimensions of your body. It’ll make the choice for a perfectly fitting garment a lot easier. That will make you look good and improve your mood and well-being. The only tracking device you’ll need for that is an old fashioned tape-measure.

TOPS

Chest
Measure around the widest part of your chest.

Sleeve
Measure from the shoulder neck point along shoulder seam and down outer sleeve to cuff edge.

Waist
Measure around the narrowest part of your waistline.

Length
Measure the distance straight down your back from your neck to your hip.

We’ve been obsessing over the fits of our shirts since 1921. Although styles and fashions change constantly (the shirt that looked infinitely cool on Steve McQueen in 1964 would probably make you look like a buffoon today) we take pride in offering shirts for every kind of body shape (according to us, these are a bit less susceptible to fashion), but we also don’t want to make things overly complicated. We think that by offering a regular fit, a slim fit and a detailed size chart, (almost) anyone can find a perfectly fitting shirt.

In anatomy (the science that describes the human body) a distinction is made between three different types that describe most men’s bodies. These categories are also helpful when deciding on how to dress:

Ectomorph: The lean and narrow body type. Men with this shape typically have narrower shoulders and chests. Look for a slim fit.

Mesomorph: The broad-shouldered, narrow-hipped inverted wedge shape. Men with this physique generally put on muscle easily and maintain a trim waist. The width of the shoulders determines the choice of a slim fit or a regular fit.

Endomorph: This type, with more rounded contours, tends to gain weight in the abdomen. When slim, endomorphs retain a stocky overall build and a more cylindrical torso rather than the mesomorph’s wedge shape. Look for a regular fit.

Hip
Measure around the widest part of your hips.

Crotch
Measure the inside of your leg to your anklebone.

Lower waist
Measure the circumference just below your belly button.

A pair of McGregor chino’s should fit perfectly around your waist – you shouldn’t need a belt to hold them up. The waist will sit lower than suit pants, right in between the upper and mid hip-bone area. When the waist of your chino sits below that area, you are denying yourself the classic style of one of the most versatile pieces of men’s clothing that’s ever invented. And that would make us a bit sad. On the other hand, a perfect fitting chino can be the foundation of a wide range of personal styles (including yours).

The butt area should not be saggy or tight. Sitting or bending down should be easy; you shouldn’t be restricted in your movements. But if you’re more than 15 years old, it definitely shouldn’t be baggy either. When the vague contours of your butt aren’t visible you should try a different fit or go down a size.

You want a little more room in the thighs of your chino, compared to your jeans. You should be able to pinch an inch of fabric, but no more than 1.5 inches on either side of your thigh.

The length of your chino’s is a matter of personal preference. Casual chinos can be slightly longer than you need so you can roll them up. When you you want to wear your chino in a more formal manner, a slight break at the shoe is enough.

Slim fit

The McGregor Slim Fit is well tailored through the thigh down to the cuff. It’s not radical, but a well-balanced, modern, tailored fit.

Regular fit

If you have a larger build or muscular thighs (or if you fall in either the mesomorph or endomorph category) the Regular Fit is perfect for you and will give your body a well-proportioned appearance.
